The sacred tooth relic is carried through the roads amid a grand panache in the city of Kandy and is considered as one of the most beautiful processions in Asia. During the festival, caparisoned Tuskers brighten up the streets with their intriguing presence. Then there are aromatic flowers, flickering lamps, and the chanting of prayers. All of this with energetic dancers, fire breathers, acrobats, melodious singers and several different performers parading in perfect synchronization. It is believed that Esala Perahera, commemorates the enlightening teachings of Lord Buddha. The procession is held to seek the blessings of the Almighty. Also, to request for rains for the growth of crops in the farm as these months are essential for irrigation purpose in Asia. They pray to make the lands more prosperous and enriched.

Beginning from August 16, the festival will go on till August 26. The first five days involve Kumbal Perahera and the next set of days involve Randoli Perahera.
